Discipleship Wednesdays

Posted by Brad Mendenhall on 02/08/12 @ 12:50 PM

We are excited about a 10 week Discipleship journey we will be taking on Wednesday nights starting Feb. 8th as a church.  The adults will be meeting at 2 locations in small groups to go through the study – one group at the church in the Kiddyland Room and the other group at Kaffee Klatsch, on the downtown square at the corner of Grand & Broadway Streets.

Pastor Robert Morris says it well, “Being a Christian is about so much more than following a list of rules and regulations or sticking to a strict list of dos and don’ts; it’s about growing in your relationship with your Heavenly Father and becoming more and more like Jesus every day.”

If you are looking for a real and intimate relationship with Jesus, and a fulfilling and blessed life, this study is for you.  This study will give us an overview of 10 crucial steps that will lead us into a deeper relationship with Christ and a victorious experience as a believer.  Hope to see you there!

Awake21 Fast

Posted by Brad Mendenhall on 01/09/12 @ 04:18 PM

Well it's finally here!  Awake21 Fast has kicked off for us here at World Harvest.  I've heard from many that have been challenged to get control of their flesh through the discipline of fasting.  I believe that a key to 2012 being a successful year is by putting God first.

The biggest enemy was have to living the God First Life is our Flesh nature.  The Apostle Paul talks about the struggle in Galatians 5:16-17, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won't be doing what your sinful nature craves.  (17)  The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions” (NLT).

It’s remarkable to realize just how loud of a voice our Flesh has!  For me, I’ve only been on the Fast for a few hours & my Flesh is already feeling very uncomfortable with the thought of only Fruits & Veggies for 21 days!  It makes me feel good to know that I have power over my Flesh nature and that I don’t have to succumb to the dictates of it.  The Apostle Paul also talks about the disciplining of the Flesh in I Corinthians 9:27, “I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. (NLT)”

I believe as we successfully go through this 21 Days of Fasting & Prayer that we will have greater control over the desires of our Flesh and see greater victories in the Spiritual realm.  Let’s have more of God in 2012 and less of us!!

WH Fast 2012

Posted by Brad Mendenhall on 12/31/11 @ 10:48 AM

As a way to give God first place in our life going in to a new year, we will be asking the congregation to participate in a 21 Day fast.  This will be our 4th year in participating in this fast.  We will be joining thousands of others as we quiet our minds and focus on the Lord for 21 days starting Monday, January 9th through, Sunday, January 29th.  For most, we will be participating in the Daniel Fast.  This means we will not be eating Meats, Dairy or Breads during this period. I challenge you to participate.  If you feel that you can't do the Daniel Fast, find something in your life that you can Fast.  The key is to deny the Flesh and focus on the Lord.

Here are some great internet resources for the Fast...

I am thrilled about this opportunity to learn more about fasting! It has always been a bit of a mystery to me...I was an uneducated tho interested person! I did read some literature on the Daniel Fast, then I redefined my fast and also excluded eggs & dairy...I want to experience the FULL benefits, so am trying to do it as instructed!! Jumbos has the soy milk, (non dairy) tho not sure about the preservatives part...looking to find an alternative so I can have oatmeal with some sort of milk product...we'll see what is out there! Today sauteed some portabello mushrooms...YUMMY!! Did not use Worcestershire sauce as it has some things we can't have!! I used olive oil. I can do this one for 21 days!! I just remind myself..this too shall pass...mostly tho, I am doing it for GOD!!! I did alright with out my coffee....Thank you for making this open and available so we can receive and offer support!!! That makes a world of difference to me!! I love the support and knowing I am not doing it alone!! Comparing notes helps!!
Ready for day # 2!!! What a wonderful way to KICK off 2012!!!

I recently subscribed to a leadership podcast by Pastor Stovall Weems of Celebration Church in Jacksonville, Florida.  I was blessed & challenged by one of his recent podcast about being a Builder / Grower and not just a Manager.  His message resonated with me as I took a look at my leadership.  It seems that much of my time & the time of many of our leaders is spent Managing what we have responsibility over and not adequate time Growing our areas of ministry.

After listening to Stovall's podcast, I really wanted to find a way to get this lesson into the hands of our leaders.  One thought was to take his lesson and reteach it to our leaders, but it seems to be difficult to get all of our leaders together because of conflicting schedules.  So I took Stovall's podcast and edited it down and I am asking all of our leadership team to take the time to listen to it.  It is about 15 minutes long.

Go to our Media Resource page and listen/download "Great Leaders are Builders" podcast.  You can click on the 'Series' tab in the Player window and subscribe to the 'WHC Staff' podcast if you like and it will download to iTunes if you have Apple products.

I believe that Lord wants to take World Harvest to a new level, and I also believe that in order for that to happen, it's going to take our entire leadership team working together to His plan come to pass!  I thank God regularly for our leadership team & feel honored to lead such a great team!

Special Services with David Mallonee

Posted by Brad Mendenhall on 12/05/11 @ 04:44 PM

What a great word that David Mallonee brought to us yesterday in our morning services & in the special workshops in the afternoon.  Many people said his message was just for them, including me!

It seems that many are going through a financial storm right now and the story of how God brought the Apostle Paul through the horrific storm in Acts 27 was so powerful.  The principles that brought Paul through the storm are still effective for our life today when we find ourself in the midst of a storm.

I really connected with David's 4 take-away points...

  1. Mercy will Triumph over Justice - thank God for His mercy!!
  2. The Holy Spirit will tell us something to do that will help us
  3. Regardless of the storm, your purpose / destiny doesn't change
  4. Good things will happen because of the Storm
If you didn't get to hear the message, or would like to hear it again, check out video broadcast segment to our website.

Also, here is the the link for the interactive storybook series for kids that David talked about in the service - www.HeyPlug.com

Remember, "Heaven will do everything that it has to do to get you to where you need to go!"

Envelope Fundraiser

Posted by Brad Mendenhall on 11/08/11 @ 02:59 PM

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Envelope Fundraiser for Operation Home Improvement.  We started with 150 envelopes labeled in increments of $1 and by the Monday morning, 75 envelopes have been taken and so far $4,565 has been raised for the next step in improving our children's ministry rooms here in our current facility.

We still have half of the envelopes that need to be filled.  We will have them available this Sunday for those who did not get a chance to be a part of sowing seed into our Children's Ministry.  Our Chldren's Education Director, Jonathan Sturgeon, and his team are anxious to get started with the remodeling.  In fact, they will be having a work day this Saturday, Nov. 12th, to get started on some of the projects.  They welcome your help if you are able!

Our XKidz Room will be receiving most of the attention with a complete face lift consisting of new paint, lighting, leveling of floor, and some much needed improvements.

If you would like to help with this project, click here to give online and help make a difference in children's lives of the Enid area.

Halloween

Posted by Brad Mendenhall on 10/29/11 @ 10:25 PM

I was recently asked what our stance is on the celebration of Halloween.  I was sent this by one of our leaders that I thought would be good to pass on....

This is always a difficult time for Christians, especially those with children. It has been suggested that for a Christian to be asked to celebrate Halloween is like asking a Holocaust survivor to celebrate Hitler's birthday!

It is also a dangerous time for some, since many of the seemingly "harmless" involvements associated with Halloween can also be "entries" for the occult, and can prove very tragic for the unwary.

Pagan Background

In ancient Britain and Ireland, the Celtic festival of Samhain was observed on October 31, the end of summer. November 1 was the new year for both Celtic and Anglo-Saxon calendars and was one of the most important and yet sinister calendar festivals of the Celtic Year.

Settling in northern France and the British Isles, the Celtic people engaged in occultic arts and worshiped nature, giving it supernatural, animistic qualities. (Much like our Federal government is attempting to enforce today.)

The ancient Druids were the learned priestly class of the Celtic religion. Many of their beliefs and practices were similar to those of Hinduism, such as reincarnation and the transmigration of the soul, which teaches that people may be reborn as animals. The Druids believed that on October 31, the night before their New Year and the last day of the old year, Samhain, the Lord of Death, gathered the souls of the evil dead who had been condemned to enter the bodies of animals.

The Druids also believed that the punishment of the evil dead would be lightened by sacrifices, prayers and gifts to the Lord of Death. (This begins to reveal the strange link between this holiday and the non-Biblical concept of purgatory.)

The souls of the dead were supposed to revisit their homes on this day, and the autumnal festival acquired a sinister significance, with ghosts, witches, hobgoblins, black cats, fairies, and demons of all kinds said to be roaming about. It was the time to placate the supernatural powers controlling the processes of nature.

And, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther drove a stake into the heart of many of the prevailing non-Biblical concepts by nailing his famous 95 theses to the Castle Church door in Wittenberg, Germany, which started the movement known today as the Reformation-the single most important event in modern history.1 Appropriately, he did this on Halloween.

Modern Halloween Traditions

In early American history, Halloween was not widely practiced until the 20th century, when it was introduced by the Irish Catholic settlements. Gradually, Halloween became a secular observance, and many customs and practices developed. The carved pumpkin may have originated with the witches' use of a skull with a candle inside to light the way to coven meetings.

Since 1965 UNICEF, an agency of the United Nations, has attempted to incorporate into the Halloween observance the collection of money for the United Nations Children's Fund. This exploitation by the ungodly United Nations of this pagan holiday seems strangely appropriate.

The Occult is Increasingly Popular

Halloween is, for many, a "crossover" involvement in which innocent games can lead to serious entanglement with real witches, neo-pagans, New Agers, and other occultists.2 A common pastime is the use of a Ouija board to attempt to contact ghosts or spirits that are believed to be roaming about. This can lead to serious consequences including demon possession.3 Demons have a vested interest in Halloween because it supports the occult, and it also offers novel and unexpected opportunities to control and influence people.

Forms of the occult can include mediums, channelers, clairvoyants, psychics, spiritists, diviners, mystics, gurus, shamans, psychical researchers, Yogis, psychic and holistic healers, astral travel, astrology, mysticism, Ouija boards, Tarot cards, contact with the dead, UFOs, and thousands of other practices which almost defy cataloging.

Occultism includes Satanism, astrology, Kabbalah, Gnosticism, theosophy, witchcraft and many forms of serious magic. It includes activities seeking the acquisition of "hidden" things-which are expressly forbidden by God in the Bible.

The Biblical View

Halloween practices can open the door to the occult and can introduce forces into people's lives that they are not equipped to combat.4 There is genuine power in the occult, but it is demonic power.5

Any serious study of Biblical demonology will reveal Satan as the power behind false religion, witchcraft, idolatry and the occult.6 The Word of God makes it clear that these are all to be shunned as dangerous. There were many superstitions and false concepts in ancient Israel about which the Bible is silent. However, occultism, in any form, was punishable by death! Why?

The spiritual power and reality behind idols involves demons.7 The Bible commands us to shun occult practices. Mediums and spiritists are expressly prohibited.8 Nowhere are such practices acceptable.

A Halloween Project?

Every year, many people are perplexed as to how to deal with the children's celebrations surrounding Halloween. On the one hand, participating in the perpetuation of the usual pagan (and occultic) rituals are hardly the enterprise of a Biblical Christian. On the other hand, creating constructive alternatives can be challenging.

Many churches and families organize a "Harvest" festival with games, prizes, etc., as an alternative party opportunity. These are gaining widespread interest and are to be encouraged.

Organizing a drama event to involve the older children is an alternative candidate; such an effort could include Saul and the Witch of Endor, from 1 Samuel 28, as a play.

[The winning scripts resulting from a play-writing contest held a few years ago are available through K-House.]

Your Protection

Intellect alone is insufficient. "If it were possible, it would deceive the very elect." This is another example of the necessity to truly understand the Armor of God as outlined in Ephesians 6.
